As villagers will know, there has been a speed-activated 'Slow Down' sign in Cocking for some time. This is activated by motorists exceeding the 30 m.p.h. limit on entering Cocking from the north on the A286. Since 1st November, Cocking has had a second sign to warn traffic entering the village down Cocking Hill from the Chichester direction. Our reporter photographed the new sign today (from the verge) and we have produced an animation to demonstrate how it works when activated by a speeding motorist.
It wasn't difficult to take a shot of the illuminated sign as all the cars which passed the sign while our reporter was taking his pictures broke the speed limit. There's a messge in that somewhere.
While on the subject of compliance with laws, this website has been asked to remind its readers that the bus shelter is a No Smoking zone. A fact that seems to have escaped some of its users.
This Year's Summer Visitor

It is becoming almost an annual event - spotting the steam tractors that pass through Cocking as summer visitors. Last year you may remember that a 1913 Burrell Gold Medal Tractor stopped at Milestone Garage. This year 'Victoria, Empress of India', an 1886 Marshall Traction Engine, passed through in a stately manner on her (are tractors hers?) way back to Petersfield.
For those who need the full details, the 'Empress' is a owned by Sewards of Petersfield and we believe there was a 54 inch threshing machine stowed in the van th tractor was towing.
New South Downs Boundary may run through Cocking

New proposed boundaries have been published that exclude Midhurst, Petworth, Fernhurst, Milland, Northchapel, Petersfield and Liss from the plans for a South Downs National Park. The revised boundary, based on the inspector's recommendation, runs south around Midhurst crossing the A286 less than 200 metres north of the turning to Heyshott (Bex Lane).

The revised boundary is only 'indicative and will be subject to a further period of consultation assuming that the Minister decides to reopen the South Downs public inquiry in late 2007. The consultation period on that decision runs from 2nd July to 13th August 2007.
Parish Meeting 2007

The annual Parish Meeting was held in Cocking Church on the evening of 24th May.
In addition to the main business, the retirement of Aubrey Marks and Juliet Kay as councillors was marked and they were thanked for their work on the Parish Council by Chair, Frances Russell.
The Sussex Police set up a speed trap on the corner of the A286 opposite the Post Office this weekend. Before long they were flagging down motorists caught breaking the 30 m.p.h limit that applies through the village.
It will be no surprise to local residents that these drivers had driven past the speed sensitive warning sign and were still over the limit.
One of the first cars stopped was a powerful red Ferrari, but this was swiftly followed by an old red Volvo estate. No pattern there except perhaps the colour, but it was good to see some positive action from the Police.
Local Sculptor's work unveiled at new Wembley Stadium

Cocking's renowned resident sculptor, Philip Jackson is no stranger to high profile commissions and his latest work is no exception. The twice life-size bronze of famous footballer and captain of England's 1966 World Cup winning team, Bobby Moore, was unveiled today.
Resplendent in its prominent position at the entrance to the new Wembley Stadium the work was unveiled by team mate Bobby Charlton. The speeches included tributes from Prime Minister, Tony Blair, Sir Trevor Brooking and Bobby Moore's wife Stephanie.
With the 2007 FA Cup Final just around the corner, the statue will be seen by another 90,000 people soon.
