Column unveilingOn Friday, 15th April about 150 villagers and guests were invited by the Cocking History Group to attend the unveiling of Cocking History Column, which was commissioned as part of the nation's Millennium celebrations.

They heard from Philip Jackson of the skills shown and the hard work undertaken by the Group on the project over the last few years. Kim Leslie of the County Record Office then explained how the monument was also part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. He added that the two village maps set in the plinth were not only unique within Sussex in being cast in bronze, but that they were the only such Millennium Maps in the UK.

Lady Cowdray unveiled the History Column, which at last allowed the assembled guests to admire it in its new Downland setting, provided by Lord and Lady Cowdray.

Dedication prayers were then led by the Revd. Colin Bradley and the guests took a closer look at the column before retiring to Manor Farm Barn for an excellent lunch.
